How Our Mugs Are Made — Step by Step
Every Uliclay mug is the result of pure handcraft — from the very first shape to the final firing.
We work in small batches, which means every piece is unique and made with time, care, and attention.
Production time: usually 3–4 weeks — the time needed for drying, hand-finishing, and two firings.
1. Shaping the mug and the handle separately
We start by forming the main body of the mug, while the handle is crafted separately to ensure perfect shape and comfort.
2. Hand-sculpting decorative elements
Eyes, mouths, inscriptions, and other design details are all shaped by hand — piece by piece.
That’s how each mug gains its unique personality.
3. Attaching the handle and decorative parts
We carefully attach the handle and other details, smoothing the joints so they’re both strong and seamless.
4. Natural drying for 3–4 days
The mugs dry slowly and naturally to prevent cracks.
This gentle process reduces waste and makes the final product more durable.
5. Hand-finishing the surface
After drying, each mug is carefully refined — we smooth the surface and remove any roughness for a clean, elegant finish.
6. Leveling the base
We make sure every mug stands evenly by hand-leveling the bottom.
7. Hand-painting (with our own clay-based pigments)
We decorate each mug using engobes — natural clay pigments we make ourselves.
This gives the colors a deep, rich tone and lasting durability.
8. First firing (bisque firing)
The first firing transforms the dried clay into a solid ceramic form — strong and ready for glazing, but still unglazed.
After this step, the mug no longer crumbles and is prepared for the next stage.
9. Glazing
After the first firing, we coat the mug with glaze — it adds shine, makes the surface smooth and durable, and allows the mug to be dishwasher safe.
10. Second firing (glaze firing)
The final firing seals the glaze and turns the mug into a finished piece.
After this, we carefully inspect every mug and pack it up — ready to meet its new owner.
